My Weight Loss Journey (part 3)

MORE ONLINE HELP
In my quest to make myself and my family healthier in all aspects of nutrition and housekeeping, I have found quite a few very helpful sites.  Not just buying and cooking the “right” foods are important. So part 3 of "My Weight Loss Journey" will detail the sites that have taught me everything I know!

MY FITNESS PAL vs SLIMKICKER
I mentioned that My Fitness Pal was what helped me track my calories.  It encouraged me to keep logging my food and exercise.  Each day you log your activity, it records it and tells you how many days you’ve logged in a row.  I’ll admit, though, that I’ve been discouraged when I forget to log in just one day and the count that was close to 100 goes back to zero.  Recently, I received word about a new program, very similar to My Fitness Pal called Slimkicker!  I started an account, and plan to begin logging and using their site exclusively.

RAW MILK SITES
Almost two years ago, a dear friend of mine switched her family (2 adults, 2 children) to raw milk, pastured eggs and grass fed beef.  I’ll admit…….I was intrigued.  Honestly, I was a bit disgusted by the idea of raw milk.  I was also worried about giving it to my children.  Is it safe?  What if they get sick?  How do I know it’s the right thing to do?  I trust my friend in that I know she would never do anything to endanger her family.  So I started researching.  I found two great sites in particular that gave me all of the information that helped me make my informed decision:  Weston A Price and Dr. Mercola.  Also, there’s a great site (set up by the Weston A Price foundation) with very specific information on “real” milk.

The two most important points that helped me decide to switch to “real” milk:
1 – Raw milk is safe!  Conventional milk is pasteurized to get rid of dangerous bacteria.  The dangerous bacteria is there because the cows are not eating what nature intended them to eat (grass), and they are kept in absolutely disgusting conditions.  Those cows are so sick from their unnatural diets and conditions, and produce some pretty disgusting milk (pus and blood are in their milk!), so it must be pasteurized.  I would never drink raw milk from a “conventional” dairy farm as that milk would not be safe.  But, by knowing how the cows are kept and fed at my local farm, I am confident that I am purchasing milk that is safe for me and my whole family.  Please be sure you know the conditions your cows are in before buying raw milk.  Check your state laws as well.  Being informed is the best way to avoid getting sick.
2 – Raw milk is healthy!  I noticed a 5 lb drop in only 2 weeks after switching from fat free half & half to raw heavy cream daily in my coffee.  I did nothing else different (consumed the same calories and exercised the same) and my weight dropped quicker than the 1lb/week it had been.  Also, I’ve noticed our entire family seems to be healthier.  This is the first spring we have not suffered from allergies!  I used to have asthma and suffer from pretty bad allergies.  But now that we are eating healthier, combined with the great probiotics in our raw milk, we seem to have been spared this season!  Our immune systems seem much stronger.  The only evidence I can give is that when the bad stomach virus was going around, my kids only vomited once and felt sick for 6-10 hours when everyone else seemed to be vomiting ever 20 min and felt sick a minimum of 24 hours.

Another important point to note about milk in general is that it is one of the biggest causes of allergies and asthma in children and adults!  In my studies to become a certified nutritionist, I’ve learned it’s important to do a 14 day fast from dairy to see if allergy conditions improve.  If they do, you may have a milk allergy to some degree.  But from the research, most people who are lactose intolerant or have allergies, are able to handle raw milk.  (Please seek the advice of your doctor or allergist before consuming milk – raw or not – if you’ve been diagnosed with an allergy.)  The problem with “conventional” milk is that it is missing many of the beneficial probiotics your body needs to fight off allergens (the good bacteria is killed in the pasteurization process).  Also, the protein structures of the milk are changed when heated which is what many people have the allergic reaction to (allergic reaction can mean many different things, depending on the person and severity).    See this article here for more information.

Now, where do you get raw milk?  It’s difficult to find unless you know someone who is buying it.  Unfortunately, I can’t give detailed information on how to find it as farmers fear being shut down by the government.  My best advice is to go to the Real Milk website and search your specific area.  If nothing is listed, go to your local farmers’ market and start asking.  It all depends on the laws in your state.

Aside from the controversial “real milk” debate, I have found Dr. Mercola’s website to be extremely helpful in my journey to get myself and my family healthy.  He has educated me on many topics from how to get rid of cleaning chemicals in my home (and use natural essential oils) to how to cook foods properly to ensure the most nutrition stays in the foods we eat.

LIVESTRONG
Usually when I find a topic on Dr. Mercola’s site, I go over to www.livestrong.com to check what they have to say about the same topic.  Many times, they are saying the same things, but this other site seems more “conventional” than holistic.  I think many people call the holistic movement “crunchy granola” or “a little crazy” but conventional sites like Livestrong seem better accepted by the mainstream population.   I would highly recommend doing research there for just about any topic you want to know more about.

TEAM BEACHBODY
I guess this site is the most obvious…..yes, I’m a Beachbody coach, so of course I would recommend our site!  But it’s more than just that.  I’ve found accountability there.  I’ve found information there.  And I’ve been challenged there!  Just signing up for a free beachbody account and logging your workouts in the Supergym (in real time) will get you entered to win $500 daily!  I have to admit, I get frustrated with myself when I’m not working out because I know I missed a chance to be entered to win real cash money.  If you become a Club Member, you also get the benefit of a discount on all products plus personalized meal plans and shopping lists.

GCNM
The last website I’ll mention in this post (that is much longer than I anticipated!) is the college I’m attending online:  Global College of Natural Medicine.  After becoming more and more interested in understanding how natural foods can heal the body, I decided to become a certified holistic nutritionist.  So I started searching for programs available.  It would have to be something online and affordable.  There are many programs out there, but nothing seemed doable until I found GCNM.  And the fact that 80% of my tuition could go towards a bachelor’s degree, Holistic Health Practioner, really made the decision for me.  Now, not only am I learning all of these things to help myself and my family, but I will be certified to help others officially and plan to continue my studies all the way to get my phd!

I have learned more in my Nutritional Consultant course than anywhere else.  Although I have researched many topics on the other sites, I haven’t read through the scientific research explaining the experts’ various opinions until now.  It makes sense.  I see the science behind the information.  It’s shocking that the knowledge I’m gaining is not the mainstream information available to everyone.  I hope to be able to educate others, especially moms, in how to better provide nutrition and safe products in their homes.

Stay tuned for Part 4 when I will detail how I cleaned out our pantry!

P90X Review, 3 weeks in.....

P90X....the very mention of it used to give me the chills. Really? A workout so extreme that only people who have major muscles need apply......But then I became a Team Beachbody coach back in September and started to consider doing P90X.

I started with Chalean's Turbo Jam and worked my way through that program in 30 days. I'd never done any type of martial arts workouts, and I realized I love it!  It definitely does not feel like a workout to me, but just a fun time of burning calories (yes, really!).  But I was only conditioned to do 20-30 minute workouts, as anything past that and I usually crumpled on the floor in a sweaty mess.

One day in late October, I spent the night reading through the Success Stories on my TBB page.  What did the majority of them have in common?  P90X!  Ugghhh......really?  Again with the P90X!  Then Beachbody announced it was going to offer P90X Certification.  I was thinking about becoming a personal trainer, so the wheels started turning.....maybe I should try this P90X thing.  I'm certainly NOT the P90X "type" (if there is one), but maybe I could at least try.  There were women who looked like me at the beginning who looked amazing at the end of their 90 day transformation!

So I did it.  I ordered that bad boy and when it arrived, I had to leave town for 2 weeks.  I was so ready to begin the program, but it would have to wait until I returned from my trips.  Then, Thanksgiving happened, and P90X sat next to my DVD player until 2 weeks ago.  Finally, I decided NO more putting it off.  I was going to start this thing and see it all the way through.  One thing you should know about me is that I'm a rule follower.  Since P90X has several specialized programs, I chose one and decided to stick to the schedule religiously.  I am on Day 16 as of today!  There really is hope that I'll be a P90X grad in 74 more days......

Let me break down my own review of the workouts and moves:

PUSH UPS & PULL UPS
Chest & Back, Shoulders & Arms, Legs & Back all include pull-ups and push-ups along with many other crazy intense exercises!

Who knew I could actually do real push-ups?  I started out being able to do push-ups on my knees only.  Now, I can do many sets of push-ups, the real kind, and up to 10 at a time!  I use the P90X push up stands and believe that is a big part of the reason why I'm able to do push-ups.  I've always had trouble with my wrists, so now I have no strain whatsoever and can concentrate on doing the movement correctly.  I can't bend all the way down yet, but I'm getting there!  Step-by-step baby!

I have not been able to do pull-ups yet, even assisted.  But, I'm not giving up.  I use resistance bands wrapped around a spindle on my staircase.  I can tell my muscles are getting stronger, as I have to back up farther each day.  My goal, before the 90 days are up, is to be able to do 5 pull-ups (assisted is fine, but I'd like to do at least ONE unassisted!).

AB RIPPER X
I really struggle with sit-ups.  My hips pop every time I do a move, so I'm thinking I may need to see my chiropractor.  (I was hit by a drunk driver in Jan. 1997 and have a permanent disability in my back and neck.)  I still do as much as I can, though.  For some crazy reason, I enjoy the "heels to heaven" move!  I've had 3 c-sections, so my goal is to keep at this workout and avoid a future tummy tuck!

KENPOX
This is my favorite workout so far.  For some reason, doing martial arts as a workout isn't difficult for me!  I LOVE IT!  I enjoy the whole workout and I'm able to keep up for the whole hour now.  I actually substituted KenpoX for Yoga one day!  When I first did this workout, I thought Tony was crazy when he said, "Ok, it's break time.  Let's start running in place.  Now jumping jacks.  Now X jacks."  What?!  He IS crazy....but I'm able to keep up now after only 16 days.  Amazing, people.  I'm the girl who played ZERO sports and weighed over 200 pounds back in April.

PLYOMETRICS
This is probably my second favorite workout.  I usually burn about 400+ calories doing this workout!   The exercises are not terribly difficult.  One of them is pretending to jump over an imaginary rushing stream.  He also has some faux basketball moves that are kind of fun.  Did I just say plyometrics is fun?  Wow.........It's more the intensity and constant movement that is difficult.  So I challenge myself each time.  I try to do as many as I can, but quit when I feel like I'm going to fall over!

YOGA
Sorry yoga fans, I'm just not crazy about the yoga.  It's a 90 min workout and I get really bored with it.  I guess I'm just a fan of the high intensity workouts.....I've only tried it once, and since then, I sub it out with Plyometrics or Kenpo X.

I will update my review after Christmas when I will have completed 30 days.  And if I'm brave enough, I'll even post pics of Day 1 and Day 30.  I know for me, that's the reason why I chose P90X -- because people posted their before and after pics!

Chocolate Shakeology No-Bake Cookie Recipe

I have been reading about using Shakeology in my recipes, so I finally decided to try one out tonight.  I researched "no bake cookie" recipes and chose a great, simple one on allrecipes.com and altered it just a bit.   The results were amazing!  These are really yummy, gooey little cookies packed with lots of great ingredients, especially because of the Shakeology.

I will warn you, though, my version turned out pretty sticky!  I'm not sure if it's because we didn't wait for them to completely set up or not. *wink*  I'll experiment with them again to see if I can get a better finished product.  But gooey or not, these are too good not to share!

I also experimented and made my own homemade almond butter by simply putting sliced almonds, approximately 2 tablespoons of honey and about 1/4-1/2 cup of water in the blender and blending until smooth.

If you don't have a Team Beachbody coach yet and/or you don't know where to order Shakeology, click here.

CHOCOLATE SHAKEOLOGY NO-BAKE COOKIES

Ingredients:

  • 1 3/4 cups raw sugar or brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup evaporated milk (or regular milk)
  • 1/2 cup butter (please do not use margarine!)
  • 1 scoop Chocolate Shakeology
  • 3/4 cup almond butter
  • 3 cups quick-cooking oats
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions:

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine sugar, milk, butter, and Shakeology. Bring to a boil, and cook for 1 1/2 minutes.

  2. Remove from heat, and stir in almond butter, oats, and vanilla. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto wax paper. Let cool until hardened. (I think you could also spread the cookie batter into a well-greased 9X13" pan, let cool, and cut into bars, too.)

My weight loss journey.....

In April of this year, I decided that I would no longer waste away my life.  I weighed in at my heaviest number and was determined to get healthy.

But what does healthy mean to me?  Instead of choosing a specific weight, I have decided to make a healthy BMI my goal, which means it must be under 25.  I began at a BMI of 32, and decided to give myself a full year to lose the weight.

The First 30 Days
I started with Jillian Michaels' 30 Day Shred.  I made a commitment to do her video every day for 30 days back in May.  I've heard that anything you do for 21 days becomes a habit.  If I can really work out every day, maybe this will become a habit for me.  (Secretly I didn't believe working out would ever become something I would enjoy to do, but I was hoping for the best!)

I also committed to using www.myfitnesspal.com daily to record my calories.  Eating 1400 calories per day seemed nearly impossible.  Instead of switching to fat-free and sugar free, though, I made the decision to eat "clean".  I wanted to cook the same food for my children and my husband that I was going to eat.  This had to be a long-term thing for me, so a complete renovation of our pantry and fridge began back in April.

After The Initial 30 Days
After I successfully completed the 30 Day Shred, I noticed a very strange thing:  I actually wanted to workout daily!  I ordered Jillian's Ripped in 30 next.  Then it was Beachbody's TurboJam, and then I even began the Couch 2 5K program!

I've brought my calories down to 1200 daily, and try to exercise every day, or at least 5 times a week.  I've also read Made to Crave by Lysa Terkherst, and completed her 21 Day Devotional three times!  I discovered that I had a food addiction, and that I have to fight it.  Filling up on whole foods like organic fruits and veggies, and trying new healthy recipes that my entire family enjoys has changed my life!  I finally have freedom in my eating!  Diet IS a four-letter word.  I am not on a specific diet, other than counting calories.

We eat healthy food.  Do I "cheat" and eat "bad" things every now and then?  YES!  I haven't restricted anything 100% from my diet.  If I eat a cupcake, I work out extra, or watch my calories a little closer the next day.  This is what has set me free from my food addiction.  If I am "allowed" to have whatever I want in moderation, I don't crave the "bad" stuff anymore!

At the end of August, I signed up to be a Team Beachbody coach, and now I'm preparing to become a certified personal trainer.  This is the same girl who never played sports in school and who sat on the couch watching exercise videos instead of doing them!  No longer, though.  I tell people, "It's like a crazy fitness lady has invaded my body and I'm NOT letting her out."

The Results
So it's been 6 months and this is what I have accomplished:
  • Completed 30 Day Shred (twice).
  • Completed Ripped in 30.
  • Completed 23 days of Turbo Jam.
  • Completed 3 different 30 Day Challenges with friends.
  • Brought my BMI from 32 to 27.
  • Lost 38 pounds and 8" off my waist (!!).
  • Brought my percent of body fat from 45% to 28%.
  • Changed my eating habits and drastically transformed my entire family's eating habits.
  • Run 2.8 miles in 30 minutes (on an elliptical).

Your Challenge
I'm here to tell you that if I can lose weight and be successful working out, you can too!  Join me in this journey...make a commitment to spend the next 30 days eating less and working out (even just 20 minutes a day).  I promise you will see results!  If you are willing to accept this challenge, comment on this post and let me know.
